CIO Job Satisfaction Rises with Down Economy

IT Business Edge’s Ann All has written a lot about the tough job CIOs have — a role not always easily defined and one that’s evolving. It’s been a job recently made much more difficult by the economic imperative, to use that tired phrase (sorry!), to “do even more with less.”

But even in these tough times, CIO job satisfaction is up, according to a survey by ExecuNet. Mark Anderson, ExecuNet’s president and chief economist, concedes that in times like this, people tend to be happy they have a job at all.

In the survey of 206 IT executives, 64 percent said they were satisfied with their jobs, an increase of 11 percentage points from last year, reports CIO.com. In 2007, only 41 percent of IT executives taking the survey reported being happy with their jobs.

The 36 percent of IT leaders who said they were unhappy with their jobs pointed to the main reasons as limited advancement opportunities (noted by 14 percent), compensation (11.3 percent) and lack of challenge (10 percent).
