DHS Warns of Fake Intel E-Mails

The Homeland Security Department’s counterintelligence unit is warning about fake e-mails that purport to be from the DHS’s intelligence division, according to Federal News Radio. The bogus e-mails were sent to Defense Department, state and local officials.

The DHS alert says the messages originated in Lativia and Russia. The messages, which were made to look as if they provided department intelligence assessment information, contained spyware known for stealing banking data and protected passwords. While the spyware seems to be criminal, officials “cannot discount that targeting of DHS partners and DoD personnel may be for other purposes.”
