Report Details Silicon Valley Job Losses

Tech-industry employment in Silicon Valley fellĀ  by 17 percent from 2001 to 2008, with some sectors hit harder than others, reports The New York Times.

According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there was impressive job growth in pharmaceuticals, aerospace and scientific research, while jobs declined in communication-equipment manufacturing, semiconductor manufacturing and control-instrument manufacturing.

And of course, this study ends before the brutal downturn and layoffs that have become all too common since 2008. In an editorial, The San Jose Mercury News laments the loss of middle-wage jobs, which it describes as “the backbone of a well-rounded economy.”
